Amnesty International says Gaza flooding is outcome of Israel’s genocide

(MENAFN) The destruction and human suffering caused by recent storms and heavy rainfall in Gaza were not merely the result of severe weather but stem from policies that made the catastrophe inevitable, according to a statement released Wednesday by Amnesty International.

The group said the images of submerged tents and collapsing structures seen in recent days “cannot be blamed solely on bad weather.” Instead, it argued that the damage reflects long-standing conditions imposed on the territory, describing the situation as an “utterly preventable tragedy.”

According to the statement, the flooding is the direct outcome of Israel’s ongoing genocide and its continued obstruction of essential supplies needed for shelter and repairs for displaced civilians. The organization’s senior official for research and advocacy said: “They are the foreseeable consequences of Israel’s ongoing genocide and deliberate policy of blocking the entry of shelter and repair materials for the displaced.”

The statement emphasized that only minimal aid has been permitted to enter Gaza, which it described as further evidence that Israeli authorities are continuing to “deliberately inflict on Palestinians in Gaza conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction – an act prohibited under the Genocide Convention, an act prohibited under the Genocide Convention.”

Addressing the broader implications, the senior official added: “The devastation and deaths caused by the storm in Gaza provide yet another wakeup call to the international community, paid for with the lives of people who had managed to survive two years of Israel’s ongoing genocide.”

The organization urged the international community to act immediately to help Gaza prepare for harsh winter conditions by pressuring Israel to end the blockade and remove restrictions on the entry of critical humanitarian assistance. This includes shelter materials, adequate food, and medical supplies.

The statement also noted that repeated displacement, widespread destruction or damage to at least 81% of buildings, and the designation of nearly 58% of Gaza as restricted zones have forced most Palestinians to survive in severely damaged shelters or makeshift tents, leaving them highly vulnerable to extreme weather.
