Soldier Suicides in Israel Rise Amid Gaza Conflict

(MENAFN) An Israeli serviceman has ended his own life at a military installation in northern Israel, bringing the number of "suicide-related deaths" to 61 since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023, according to reports from a newspaper.

The newspaper reported that a soldier performing compulsory military service sustained "critical injuries" after shooting himself inside a base and was declared dead Tuesday evening at a hospital.

A military announcement had earlier confirmed that a soldier was "seriously injured in a shooting" at a northern Israeli base and was transported to a hospital, where he subsequently died. The statement added that the military police had launched an inquiry into the incident.

From the start of 2024 until July 2025, a total of 279 Israeli soldiers have "attempted to commit suicide," equating to roughly one completed suicide for every seven attempts, according to a study by the Knesset Research and Information Center.

The Israeli military had previously confirmed that 48 soldiers had "taken their own lives" during active service since the beginning of the Gaza conflict in October 2023.

In addition, at least 13 soldiers died by suicide outside of active duty due to psychological challenges, including six since the start of this year. This raises the overall tally of suicides linked to the conflict to 61, as reported by the newspaper.

During 2024, 20 Israeli soldiers died by suicide, with 16 more fatalities recorded from the start of this year until July. Since then, at least four additional soldiers have reportedly ended their own lives, the newspaper added.
