500,000 Palestinians Stripped of Their Livelihoods in West Bank, Gaza
The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions declared in a statement that workers endure systematic blockades, closures, and daily incursions by Israeli military forces.
Israeli strategies "constitute a compounded crime" against Palestinian laborers and violate their fundamental right to employment and dignified living, the federation stated.
"Israeli occupation policies over more than two years of continuous aggression have led to more than 500,000 Palestinian workers losing their livelihood, with unemployment rates rising to unprecedented levels exceeding 50% in the West Bank and more than 84% in the Gaza Strip," the statement said.
The union detailed that Palestinian workers suffered economic damages surpassing $9 billion from being barred from accessing workplaces, compounded by devastation of domestic production sectors—chiefly agriculture, construction, and service industries.
The statement revealed 44 workers have been fatally shot, hundreds wounded, and more than 34,000 additional laborers arrested by Israeli forces since October 2023.
The federation assigned the Israeli government "fully responsible for these massive financial losses and for the killing of dozens of Palestinian workers at military checkpoints or due to settler attacks while they were trying to secure a livelihood for their families, in a blatant violation of international labor conventions and the Geneva Conventions."
Israeli military operations have claimed the lives of over 70,700 Palestinians and wounded more than 170,000 others in Gaza since October 2023. Israeli army raids and illegal settler violence have additionally killed at least 1,097 Palestinians and injured nearly 11,000 others in the occupied West Bank throughout the same timeframe.
