Turkish FM slams EU’s policy over Turkey’s membership hurdles
Speaking in an interview, Fidan said Türkiye’s failure to fully integrate with the EU—including gaining full member status—amounts to a historic lost chance for both sides. He argued that closer ties could have produced significant strategic advantages for Türkiye and Europe alike, according to reports.
He described relations between Türkiye and the EU as deeply rooted and said the two sides naturally complement each other in structural terms. Pointing to Türkiye’s strong economy, youthful population, sophisticated defense industry and key geographic position, Fidan said combining Türkiye’s military strength and regional influence with the EU’s capabilities could form a landmark partnership with global impact.
Fidan also argued that while the EU has successfully created a supranational framework, it has fallen short of forming what he described as a genuine civilizational union. He added that the current global environment demands unity that goes beyond civilizational divisions, enabling different cultures to work together toward common goals.
On Gaza, the Turkish foreign minister stressed that the international community must maintain continuous pressure to guarantee the steady flow of adequate food, shelter and humanitarian assistance, particularly as winter conditions intensify. He said that despite the existence of a fragile ceasefire and the entry of limited aid, current levels remain insufficient, warning that leaving civilians to endure hunger, displacement and exposure cannot be morally justified.
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security, while emphasizing that Ankara has consistently maintained that the conflict can only be ended through dialogue, a ceasefire and sustained diplomatic efforts.
