Gaza Ceasefire Talks to Take Place in Egypt
According to a statement from Hamas, the delegation is headed by Khalil al-Hayya, the group’s top official in Gaza. The talks are expected to focus on finalizing steps tied to the first stage of the truce, including reopening the Rafah border crossing for movement in both directions.
"It will also discuss accelerating the transition to the second phase, including the formation of the administrative committee and the completion of the (Israeli) occupation's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip," the statement said.
The delegation is also slated to hold meetings with leaders of Palestinian political groups and armed factions, the statement added, "to discuss the rapid political and field developments in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank," it said.
Under the October 2025 ceasefire framework, Gaza is to be governed by an interim body made up of Palestinian technocrats operating under the supervision of an international “Board of Peace.” The agreement requires Hamas to relinquish its weapons and bars the group from any future role in Gaza’s formal administration.
The Rafah crossing—Gaza’s primary gateway to Egypt and a vital conduit for humanitarian assistance—has largely remained shut since May 2024, when Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian side of the terminal. Prior to that, it served as the main exit point for Gaza residents and a key channel for aid deliveries. Israel has previously said the crossing would reopen fully only after Hamas releases all remaining hostages.
