Israel advances death penalty bill for Palestinians

(MENAFN) Israel’s parliament moves ahead with a highly contentious draft law that would permit courts to hand down the death penalty to Palestinians accused of involvement in the events of Oct. 7, 2023, according to reports.

The legislation clears its first parliamentary hurdle late Monday after gaining the support of 19 lawmakers, with no opposition recorded during the vote, as stated by reports.

The proposal aims to establish a special legal framework designed to prosecute large numbers of Palestinians accused of participating in the Oct. 7 events, which Israeli officials repeatedly describe as the gravest security breakdown in the country’s history.

The draft law is put forward through a joint effort by senior figures from the ruling Likud party, the far-right Religious Zionism party, and the Yisrael Beiteinu party, according to reports.

Under the proposal, a special court would be created and led by a retired district court judge.

This body would be granted wide-ranging powers to hear cases involving allegations such as genocide, undermining state sovereignty, assisting the enemy during wartime, and offenses linked to terrorism.

The text of the bill explicitly authorizes the use of capital punishment following a conviction. It also excludes individuals tried under this system from any future political negotiations or potential prisoner exchange arrangements.

In addition, the legislation requires all court proceedings to be broadcast live through a designated website and permanently archived within state records.

The bill now moves to the Knesset’s Constitution Committee for further examination before proceeding to its second and third readings. Israeli law requires legislation to pass three readings before it can take effect.

Israeli authorities have not published official data on how many Palestinians have been detained in connection with the Oct. 7 events. However, estimates cited in reports suggest the number reaches into the thousands.
