Smotrich Says Hamas Faces Deadline

(MENAFN) Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated on Monday that Hamas will face a “two-month ultimatum” from US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace,” compelling the group to give up its weapons.

Speaking to a local newspaper, Smotrich said, “The Board of Peace will issue a two-month ultimatum to Hamas to disarm,” outlining what he described as a firm international stance.
He stressed that Israel has no intention of concluding its military campaign in the Gaza Strip “before Hamas is destroyed,” underscoring that the conflict’s objectives remain intact.

According to Smotrich, "There will be no Hamas in Gaza, neither militarily, nor civilianly, nor in government. We made a commitment, and that is the main objective of the war."

No immediate response was issued by Trump’s “Board of Peace” following Smotrich’s remarks.
The hardline minister further claimed that Israeli forces now dominate more than half of the Gaza Strip “and controls everything,” highlighting what he portrayed as extensive military authority on the ground.

Referring to the ceasefire framework, Smotrich added, "The second phase (of the ceasefire) is for disarmament. It is unfortunate that we didn't begin it three months ago,” suggesting delays in implementing key provisions.

Trump revealed the creation of the "Board of Peace” on Jan. 15 as part of a wider Gaza initiative, under which a ceasefire deal was finalized on Oct. 10, 2025. The body later received formal approval through UN Security Council Resolution 2803 in November 2025.

The White House has said that Trump presides over the board, which is backed by a founding executive group made up of individuals experienced in diplomacy, development, infrastructure, and economic planning.
