Guterres Raises Alarm Over Israeli Actions in West Bank
According to his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres is closely troubled by Israel’s internal security decision-making. "The secretary-general is gravely concerned by the reported decision of the Israeli security cabinet to authorize a series of administrative and enforcement measures in Areas A and B of the occupied West Bank," Dujarric stated while addressing journalists at a press briefing.
Dujarric added that the UN chief is increasingly worried about the broader implications of developments on the ground. He noted that Guterres "warns that the current trajectory on the ground, including this decision, is eroding the prospect for the two-state solution."
Reaffirming the United Nations’ long-standing legal stance, the spokesperson stressed that Israel’s settlement activities remain illegitimate under international norms. "
He reiterates that all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and their associated regime and infrastructure, have no legal validity and are in flagrant violation of international law, including relevant United Nations resolutions," Dujarric said.
The secretary-general also underscored that Israel’s ongoing presence in Palestinian lands is both politically harmful and legally indefensible, describing it as "not only destabilizing" but also "unlawful."
Furthermore, Guterres appealed for immediate corrective action and renewed diplomatic commitment. He urged "on Israel to reverse these measures and on all parties to preserve the only path to lasting peace, a negotiated two-state solution, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions and international law," Dujarric conveyed.
The comments followed a decision taken by Israel’s Security Cabinet on Sunday, which approved initiatives intended to alter the legal and civil structure in the occupied West Bank, a move widely seen as reinforcing Israeli dominance over the territory.
