UNRWA Chief Warns of Dire Conditions in Gaza Amid Growing Pressures

(MENAFN) The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees warned Friday that Gaza continues to face severe humanitarian challenges while his organization experiences rising political and operational pressure, as stated by reports. Violence and settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank further threaten the prospects for peace.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said residents in Gaza are still living in survival mode despite ongoing aid efforts.

"It's true that the situation in Gaza is still desperate, that beside food, people lack almost everything and are still in a survival mode. It's a daily struggle for the people in Gaza," he said.

Lazzarini emphasized the importance of maintaining basic public services in the conflict-affected enclave, particularly education, beyond providing emergency relief.

"When it comes to an agency like UNRWA, it is absolutely key that we continue to provide public health services, that we continue to provide education, primary, secondary," he said. "I think education has to become a top priority for the international community, because the children have been out of school for more than two years."

Describing education as vital for long-term stability, he called it "a key for a better future" for Palestinians.

He also noted that the agency itself is encountering increasing constraints, including political and legal challenges that complicate its operations.
