Palestine Lauds AU Backing for Its UN Membership Bid

(MENAFN) Palestine's diplomatic leadership celebrated a major endorsement Sunday as the African Union threw its weight behind full United Nations recognition and condemned forced removal schemes targeting Palestinian populations.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry issued a statement hailing the conclusive positions adopted at the 39th African Union (AU) Summit, characterizing the continental bloc's stance as a powerful demonstration of solidarity with Palestinian self-determination rights.

Palestine specifically praised summit participants for demanding an end to Israeli occupation and urging accelerated action on granting the State of Palestine complete UN membership—a move Ramallah officials framed as both a legitimate political entitlement and established legal prerogative.

The AU wrapped its 39th session in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Sunday with a sweeping declaration endorsing Palestine's bid for full UN membership, affirming such recognition as an inherent right tied to Palestinian people's self-determination.

Summit participants issued forceful condemnation of any forced displacement initiatives targeting Palestinians, branding such efforts a "severe violation of international law."

Palestine currently maintains "non-member observer state" designation at the UN, secured through a UN General Assembly vote on November 29, 2012.

The General Assembly further adopted a resolution in May 2024 supporting Palestine's application for complete UN membership, signaling growing international momentum behind the statehood campaign.
