Global Sumud Flotilla Departs Barcelona Again to Break Gaza Blockade

(MENAFN) A renewed maritime campaign aimed at challenging the blockade on the Gaza Strip has set sail again from Barcelona, with organizers reporting a significantly larger scale than its previous mission.

The initiative, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, was established in 2025 by a coalition of NGOs, activists, and international volunteers. It is now launching its second coordinated attempt to deliver humanitarian aid and draw global attention to conditions in Gaza.

Organizers say this year’s mission represents a major expansion compared to its earlier voyage.

While the previous departure included 42 vessels and roughly 462 participants, the latest operation involves around 70 boats and nearly 1,000 volunteers representing about 70 different countries.

According to spokesperson Pablo Castilla, the purpose of the flotilla extends beyond delivering aid, focusing also on raising international awareness and calling for accountability over the situation in Gaza.

He stated:
“to condemn international complicity in what is happening in Gaza, demand accountability, and open a humanitarian corridor by sea and land.”

Castilla also argued that global attention on Gaza has diminished due to recent regional conflicts involving Iran and Lebanon, suggesting that this shift has coincided with intensified restrictions and developments affecting the territory.

Other organizers involved in the mission have emphasized that the flotilla is operating within legal frameworks and is being coordinated with Palestinian civil society groups, legal experts, and specialists in maritime operations and communications strategy.

The renewed voyage reflects continued international activism surrounding access to Gaza and ongoing debates over humanitarian relief, maritime law, and the political situation in the region.
