Turkey Urges Suspension of Israel from UN Over Policy Concerns
Speaking at the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Kurtulmus referenced the global response to apartheid, noting that South Africa’s UN membership was suspended in 1974.
He argued that similar measures should be considered in response to current Israeli policies toward Palestinians, including proposals to introduce the death penalty for prisoners in the West Bank and the use of military courts.
“Is it not apartheid to apply one law for Palestinians and another for Israelis in a single country?” he said.
Kurtulmus also criticized the United Nations, saying it has failed to effectively stop ongoing conflicts and has become increasingly ineffective in addressing violence, particularly in Gaza.
“Unfortunately, the United Nations has become an international institution directed in line with the wishes of those who hold power,” he said.
