Young Palestinian Girls Showcase Innovative STEM Solutions at Girls in Tech Closing Ceremony

Implemented by UNESCO in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and Palestine Polytechnic University, the initiative provided 120 students aged 12 to 17 across six directorates in the West Bank with hands-on learning opportunities in STEM. Girls represented around 92% of participants. The initiative aimed to increase investment in closing the digital divide among boys and girls and to ensure that girls have equal opportunities to develop their skills, pursue their interests, and excel in STEM fields.

The initiative concluded with a closing ceremony bringing together participating students, teachers, trainers and partners. During the event, students presented the projects they developed throughout the initiative, showcasing how they had transformed their newly acquired skills in robotics into practical ideas and prototypes. Outstanding projects were recognized with prizes, highlighting the creativity and innovation demonstrated by the young participants.

The projects presented at the ceremony demonstrated how students connected STEM with challenges and themes close to their everyday lives. Several projects focused on developing practical solutions to health-related needs, including challenges faced by people living with disabilities. Others drew on Palestinian culture and heritage, exploring how technology and innovation could relate to traditions and elements of local identity. Together, the projects reflected the students’ ability to look at familiar challenges and cultural practices from new perspectives and use their STEM skills to develop creative and meaningful solutions. For many participants, the initiative was more than an introduction to Robotics, AI, and Programming. It was an opportunity to discover new possibilities for their futures. Throughout the initiative, students developed not only technical skills, but also confidence, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, opening new possibilities for their future education and careers in STEM.
